The stand calendar
Which flowers, at which time of year
A seasonal flower has travelled less, costs less and lasts longer in a vase. Here is what we actually have at the stand, month by month.
Right now
In September
The shift towards copper tones. Late season hydrangeas dry beautifully just as they are.
At the stand : dahlia, chrysanthemum, aster, autumn rose, dried hydrangea.
All year
The twelve months
January
The month of bulb flowers. Tulips arrive early and hold up well in a heated flat.
At the stand : amaryllis, tulip, ranunculus, anemone, mimosa.
February
Valentine's Day concentrates demand into three days. An order placed before 10 February avoids running out of red roses.
At the stand : rose, tulip, ranunculus, mimosa, hyacinth.
March
Strong colours return. The first lilacs are heavily scented, one branch is enough for a room.
At the stand : narcissus, tulip, ranunculus, stock, lilac.
April
The first peonies appear towards the end of the month. Short season, big effect.
At the stand : peony, lilac, lily of the valley, parrot tulip, viburnum.
May
The best month of the year for a bouquet. Mother's Day and peak peony season fall together.
At the stand : peony, garden rose, lily of the valley, iris, sweet pea.
June
Wedding month. Hydrangeas cope badly with heat, so we keep them for arrangements in wet foam.
At the stand : garden rose, delphinium, sweet pea, hydrangea, campanula.
July
Summer bouquets, warm colours. Change the water every two days above 25 degrees.
At the stand : sunflower, dahlia, zinnia, hydrangea, gypsophila.
August
Dahlias are at their peak, from pompom to dinner plate size.
At the stand : dahlia, sunflower, gladiolus, amaranth, eucalyptus.
September
The shift towards copper tones. Late season hydrangeas dry beautifully just as they are.
At the stand : dahlia, chrysanthemum, aster, autumn rose, dried hydrangea.
October
Preparation for All Saints' Day. Cemetery arrangements should be ordered a week ahead.
At the stand : chrysanthemum, dahlia, physalis, berried branch, eucalyptus.
November
Few local cut flowers. This is the season for dried stems and flowering plants.
At the stand : chrysanthemum, amaryllis, anemone, berried branch, dried flowers.
December
December concentrates the whole year. Christmas orders are taken from mid November.
At the stand : amaryllis, hellebore, fir, holly, poinsettia.
Worth knowing
Making a bouquet last longer
Cut two centimetres off the stems at an angle before putting them in water, remove any leaves that sit below the waterline, change the water every two days, and keep the vase away from a fruit bowl: ripening fruit gives off a gas that ages flowers faster. A seasonal bouquet easily gains three or four days that way.
